WhatsApp for Black Friday: The Broadcast Gets Read. The Reply Makes the Sale.
Five WhatsApp plays for Black Week, what this year’s pricing change means for each of them, and a four-question test to make sure your list still reads you in December.
This guide explains five ways to use WhatsApp for Black Friday: click-to-WhatsApp ads, an early-access list, broadcasts, cart recovery, and order support. AI agents answer the replies, and your team handles the exceptions.
On WhatsApp, a broadcast is only the opening line. Black Friday sales are won or lost in the reply that comes after it.
Key Takeaways
WhatsApp works best on Black Friday for re-engagement: ads, early access, cart reminders, and order updates.
Every marketing message needs prior opt-in and an approved template, so both must be ready before Black Week.
Since October 1, 2026, replies inside the 24-hour window are billable too: every unnecessary turn now has a price.
Fewer, segmented broadcasts beat daily blasts. The goal is a list that still reads you in December.
The Burn Test: four questions that tell you whether your list survives Black Week.
Use WhatsApp as transport, not as your whole store: discovery belongs on your website, with the same agent on both.
Why Does WhatsApp Matter on Black Friday?
On Black Friday, your website gets the traffic, but WhatsApp gets the attention. Messages get read, shoppers reply, and a conversation can go from question to checkout without a single page load.
Peak season is mobile and fast. According to Adobe Analytics data reported by Talk Business, phones accounted for 56.4% of US online transactions during the 2025 holiday season. Shoppers compare, ask, and buy from the same device they use to message friends.
WhatsApp also changes what an unanswered question costs you. On a website, it usually means a closed tab. On WhatsApp, the conversation stays open, and an agent can pick it up, answer it, and bring the shopper back to checkout.
On your site, a doubt closes the tab. On WhatsApp, it opens a conversation.

What Changed in WhatsApp Pricing This Black Friday?
This is the first Black Friday where answering on WhatsApp isn’t free. From October 1, 2026, Meta charges for service messages, the replies your team or a third-party AI sends inside the 24-hour customer service window. Each one now costs the same as a utility template in that market.

The rate per message is small. What changes is the design. An agent that needs eight turns to answer “does this code work?” now costs four times what an agent that needs two does. We break down the full impact in In October, replying on WhatsApp stops being free.
Every unnecessary turn now has a price. Design the reply, not just the broadcast.
Before going further, the obvious disclosure: Landbot is a WhatsApp Business partner. We sell automation on this channel, and our customers run on it every day. That’s why the plays below are built to use the channel where it pays, and nowhere else.

ALL OF NOVEMBER
Click-to-WhatsApp Ads
Instead of sending ad traffic to a landing page, the ad opens a WhatsApp chat. The agent answers the question that made the shopper tap, recommends a product, and sends them to checkout with the offer applied. It also collects the opt-in you’ll need for the next four plays.
02
FROM MID-NOVEMBER
Early-Access List
From mid-November, invite visitors and customers to join a WhatsApp early-access list. The agent asks one or two questions (what they’re shopping for, their budget) so your Black Week messages are segmented by interest instead of sent to everyone.
03
BLACK WEEK
Broadcasts That Don’t Burn the List
Plan three to four messages for the whole of Black Week: sale opens, a personalized pick, last day. Segment by the interests you collected, and let the agent answer the replies instead of dropping them into a shared inbox. If you’re new to templates, start with our guide to creating WhatsApp message templates.
04
BLACK WEEK
Cart Recovery With an Answer
A reminder that only says “you forgot something” recovers little. A message that names the product, the deal, and when it ends, and then answers the objection behind the abandonment (shipping, size, payment), recovers more.
That’s the difference between a notification and an agent.
05
AFTER PURCHASE
Order Status and Returns
After the purchase, the same chat becomes your support channel. The agent shares order status, checks return eligibility, and hands complex cases to your team with the order details already attached. For the full support side of the peak, see our Black Friday customer service checklist.
The Burn Test: Will Your List Survive Black Week?
A WhatsApp list is the most valuable thing you’ll build this November, and the easiest to destroy in four days. Score each question from 0 to 10 (0 = this burns the list, 10 = this protects it).

Get Your WhatsApp Business Platform Number Ready
Broadcasts and agents at scale need the WhatsApp Business Platform (API), not the regular app. Our WhatsApp business automation guide explains the requirements, and this walkthrough shows how to create a WhatsApp bot step by step.
Add promotion rules, shipping windows, and the return policy as the agent’s knowledge. With Landbot, the agent answers only from what you define, and you connect your store, CRM, or help desk with integrations or webhooks, configured by you.

Submit Templates and Test
Templates can be rejected or take time to approve, so don’t leave them for Black Week. Then test every flow with real questions from last year, including the moment the conversation goes to a person.
Should WhatsApp Carry Your Whole Black Friday?
No. WhatsApp is the best channel you have for re-engagement. It’s not the best place for everything.
Discovery, comparison, and first questions from new visitors work better on your own website, where there’s no per-message cost and every answer leaves first-party data in your CRM. WhatsApp earns its cost when the shopper is already warm: an ad they tapped, a list they joined, a cart they left, an order they’re waiting for.
The answer is one agent with the same rules on both channels. You build the logic once with the AI agent builder and publish it on your site and on WhatsApp, so a shopper never gets two different answers to the same question.
Use WhatsApp as transport, not as your whole store.
Do and Don’t
DO
DON’T
Put the deadline in every message
Send “last chance” three times
Keep a person one tap away
Hide the handoff to protect deflection
Measure each play separately
Report one blended “WhatsApp revenue” number
Respect quiet hours in each time zone
Broadcast at midnight because the sale started
Answer support questions in the support flow
Push a promotion into a complaint thread

Frequently Asked Questions
No. You need the shopper’s opt-in and an approved template for marketing messages. Build the list before the sale, not during it.
For a few chats a day, yes. For broadcasts, automation, and AI agents at Black Friday volume, you need the WhatsApp Business Platform (API).
It depends on the message type and the country. Marketing and utility templates are billed per delivered message, and since October 1, 2026, replies inside the 24-hour window are billed at the utility rate. Check Meta’s rate card for each market you sell in.
It’s the period after a shopper’s last message in which you can reply freely, without a template. Once it closes, you can only restart the conversation with an approved template.
Three to four is a safe range for most lists. Watch block and opt-out rates after each send and stop if they climb.
It should hand the conversation to a person with the context attached. Design that handoff before the sale, not after the first complaint.
With Landbot, yes. You build the logic once and publish it on both, so answers stay consistent across channels.
A rule-based chatbot handles fixed paths like order lookups well. An AI agent also understands free-text questions about sizes, codes, and shipping, and still answers only from the rules you define. Most stores combine both in one flow.
